CI-340/CI-510 Ver. 5 29 March 2005 This README.TXT file contains the latest information concerning the REV 5.018 software. The files on the CI-340 CD should be copied to the directory: C:\Program Files\CI-340 You can create shortcuts to C340DF.exe and DL.exe in the C:\Program Files\CI- 340 directory by opening Windows Explorer (right click START and select Explore), right click each file in turn and select Send to... Desktop. To download a data file from the instrument to the computer, connect the RS-232 data cable from the stereo phono jack on the instrument to the DB-9 connector on the computer. Run the C340DF.exe file on the Windows 98, 2K, or XP computer then send the file from the instrument to the computer by going to the file menu (one up arrow from the initial display screen), selecting the file and pressing START/ENTER to send it. After the file is received by the C340DF.exe program, you can save it by going to the FILE menu on the tool bar of the C340DF.exe program. If you want so send all files sequentially, go to the file and press SHIFT then press START/ENTER. There will be a 5 second delay between files to allow you to save the file in the computer. If you do not respond within the allotted time, there may be a data overrun. The C340DF.exe program has been updated as of 14 March 2005. The display of extraneous data in the fluorescense saturation pulse file has been reduced. The new version is V5.2.0.0. The DL.exe program has been updated as of 14 March 2005 to work with a larger variety of computers. The new version is V1.2.0.0. The software now checks at power on to make sure that you are pressing the ON key instead of any key in the bottom row (V5.017). The selection of 0 for time interval to take measurements in manual mode now works for single channel and continuous mode (V5.018). Do not select 0 for closed system. The display of data during the measurements has been left and right justified to make them easier to read (V5.018). Instruments shipped after February 2005 may not BEEP when you press the ON key while trying to update the firmware in the instrument. The BEEP was an undocumented feature of one of the components and later components do not do it. Should you ever need to update the firmware in the instrument (the code that runs the instrument), you will need to hook up the RS-232 data cable as you do for downloading a data file and you will need to hook up the accessories cable with the switch away from the instrument (normal operation is with the switch towards the instrument). The instrument should be off. Start the DL.exe program. Select File from the toolbar. Select Open from the file menu. Find the CI_340.s19 file to send to the instrument. Hold the ON button down on the instrument (it will not stay on without holding it at this point). Start the transfer of the CI_340.s19 file by opening the file. After a few seconds, the display on the instrument will change and you can let go of the ON button. Wait for the 2-5 minutes it takes to finish downloading the code. It is best not to be running any other programs on your computer while it is downloading the code. When Windows XP is first started, extra characters are sometimes sent that do not allow the DL.exe program to synchronize with the instrument. If the instrument fails to display DLC after the few seconds it takes to download the boot program, just close DL.exe and start again. RH2KPA.exe will convert relative humidity and temperature to kPa of water vapor pressure. This can be helpful when calibrating H2O. It is recommended that you "zero" the instrument using the Calibrate CO2 function and the soda lime tube (the one with the white granules) daily or if the temperature has changed by more than 10 degrees C since the last CO2 calibration. Connect the soda lime tube to the instrument's gas input, turn the instrument on and press the down arrow three times to display Calibrate CO2 on the screen. Press START/ENTER, then START/ENTER again to select Calibrate Zero. Let the instrument run approximately 4 minutes to allow the temperatures inside to stabilize for the most accurate measurements, then press START/ENTER again to perform the calibration. When the display says to use a known concentration of CO2, you can press EXIT to avoid calibrating the span (span needs to be calibrated occasionally, but not as often). The FLOW calibration may differ from the manual. The calibration now asks you to adjust the flow output from the instrument (measured at the leaf chamber) to 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, ... 1.0 lpm. The instrument will record these levels and interpolate between them. If you do not have a calibrated flow meter, do not attempt to do the FLOW calibration. The CI-340 is capable of controlling the CI-510AD, CI-510LA, and the CI-510CS. If you are not using these accessories, just press enter to skip the question where the CI-510 asks: Control CS, AD, or LA? With the use of the CI-510LA, the response curve of photosynthesis VS. light can be seen by pressing "L" when measuring photosynthesis (that is shift, shift, shift, 4). The tick marks at the left of the screen represent 5 umole per meter squared per second. The CI-340 will control the CI-510CF Fluorescence Module. It has two modes of operation, it will measure leaf fluorescence while measuring photosynthesis, and it will measure a saturation pulse when "F" is typed while idle (that is shift, shift, shift, 2). When connecting the CI-340 to the various modules or to a computer, match the connector with the correct color to the module: yellow->AD red->CS blue->LA green->CF The manual Humidity Control on the CI-510AD should be set to maximum to allow the CI-340 to control the H2O content. The manual CO2 Control should be set to minimum. The intensity control on the CI-510LA should be set to minimum. The temperature control on the CI-510CS should be set to minimum. The CI-340 can be connected to an RS-232 port on a computer with the stereo phono plug to DB9 connector cable. If a file name ends in a number, a default file name will be generated for the next file; press enter to accept the default which will use all other settings as the previous file, or type in any valid name and proceed normally.
